The educational
standard and reputation of an institution is judged by evaluating
its strength and quality in - teaching,
research, infrastructure, training and
placement, and vision for expansion etc. These parameters need to be
continuously upgraded from time to time to avoid obsolescence in technical education. It is impossible to think of imparting purposeful professional
education without integrating it with research
component which primarily comprises of
(a) Quality Publications, and
(b)
Realization of Innovative new Products,
Techniques and Technologies etc.
For
the fulfillment of this essential aim, SSGI has a full fledged Research & Development committee headed by a highly qualified and
experienced Personnel designated as Director—Research & Development.
The Director—Research has recently taken positive steps
to inculcate R&D culture and environment at the campus by directing the faculty members to initiate as Guide
/ Project Leader new research oriented projects
particularly for the Final year students of all disciplines. The project
work is now being undertaken mostly in the institutes or at the industry where
students are undergoing industrial
training. As per directives, a list of innovative
projects based on emerging technologies is prepared six months in
advance by the project guides under the overall guidance of Director- Research in each department for
assigning these to the final year students. Based on the new guidelines
formulated by the committee, it is now mandatory to produce at least five
publications by each department in a year out of these innovative projects work
and as a result of this, positive and encouraging outcome is coming up.
In order to
augment the R&D activity further, each department has been directed to
initiate externally funded development projects and as a result of this drive, five R&D project proposals and five Modernization project proposals worth Rs. 1.25 crores
have been prepared and submitted by four departments to AICTE in the year 2011.
A research project proposal under TEQIP-
phasell program worth Rs 4.76 crore has been formulated by SSIET under the guidance of Research Director and submitted
for approval to Directorate of Technical Education — Punjab in December 2010.
In order to
perfect the half baked technologies generated
out of final year student's projects, and to enhance their viability of
commercialization by the local and regional industries, SSIET has embarked upon the new idea of setting up " Technology Incubation
Centre" at its campus by involving the students,
and faculty members for design improvements
and modification and MBA department
for marketing purpose. The Technology Incubation Center - a dream project of SSIET, when becomes operational, will prove
boon to establish small and medium scale
Entrepreneurship (SME) in the region. A proposal in this direction has
been prepared by Director - R&D and submitted to PTU for consideration and
partial funding.
In order to en cash
the tremendously large potential of wealth generation out of Software
Development Enterprise,SSIET has entered
into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with M/s Mercury
Infotech—Chandigarh. Under this joint venture, software packages are in the
process of being developed to cater the need of customers located within the
country and abroad with the involvement of
trained and expert manpower of SSIET along with those of M/s Mercury I Infotech
Chd.
In order to assist the local industries located around Dera
Bassi, Chandigarh, Mohali, Parwanoo & Ludhiana, industrial consultancy
program has been launched by SSIET by fostering close technical interaction
between academia available at SSIET and some other research institutes namely —
IlTs and technical personnel of industries. The program is making remarkable
progress according to preset targets.
Under its R&D programs, SSIET has now undertaken
the much delayed task of obtaining Accreditation Certificate from National
Board of Accreditation (NBA) New Delhi
initially for its four departments. Under the inspiring leadership of Chairman
and Principal of the institute, and over all supervision/ guidance of Director-
Research, all the faculties and Allied Services are working round the clock to accomplish the necessary tasks and
prepare the much needed document in the form of ' Self Assessment
Report'. The work is in progress.
